Awards & Scholarships

Awards:
Each year, the Minnesota Indian Education Association presents awards to deserving individuals who are working hard and doing great things in Indian Country.Award winners will be judged based on the following characteristics. Nominators should be sure to address each of these in their statements:

  • Other achievements, awards, and recognition
  • Grades (students only)
  • Role in the Indian Education community
  • Extent to which American Indian culture is reflected in their life/work style
  • Role model/leadership

Scholarship:
An award of up to $500 will be given to assist one student each year, who is attending or is planning to attend a post-secondary institution, with educational costs not met by other traditional educational scholarships.

In order to nominate a student for the Scholarship, the following requirements must be met

  • Student must be American Indian
  • Student must be enrolled in a  high school/post-secondary institution (must send documentation)
  • Student must provide an official transcript from the last semester of attendance
  • Student must provide a written one page student essay
  • Nominator must be a representative of an educational agency
  • Nominator must provide a letter of recommendation on behalf of the student

Procedure:
A nomination will only be considered complete once all of the above requirements are met and all documents are received. Once all nominations are received, a Selection Committee of the MIEA Board of Directors will select the Award Winners and the Scholarship Recipient. Nominators will be notified by e-mail if their recipient was selected, and all winners will be announced at the annual conference. There will be no exceptions in this process and selections approved by the Board of Directors will be final.
